It is a collection of separate essays that were first delivered as lectures, except for "Freud and Jung - Contrasts" (Chapter 6), which was written at the request of the editor.Speaking of Freud, he is everywhere in this book. Jung discusses his views on every occasion. At the beginning of the book he readily recognizes his contribution to modern psychology. But as the book progresses he becomes more critical. Since each chapter is a separate essay, and none of them appear to be related, I can only surmise that this progressive sequence was intentional, although it could be just a coincidence. Anyway, I now understand much better what differentiates these two thinkers. This aspect alone makes it worth reading this book. But there is so much more to be discovered here.What I found interesting, even surprising, is that the book as a whole reads more like a personal account than the succession of dry lectures I had been expecting. I cannot imagine a better introduction to Carl Jung, by Jung himself. It is a lively exposition of his views, and many of the analysis are supported by personal stories that Jung has experienced in his professional career. And even if Jung presents here several of his theories, he avoids theorizing altogether. That is what makes this material so palatable and easy to digest.It is hard to believe that all the essays have been written before 1933. For this "Modern Man in Search of a Soul" could still be found among our contemporaries. Only a few sentences would need to be rearranged to make us believe that this is a recent publication. It is what we call timeless literature. The context may have changed, but human nature remains the same. And besides, Jung was so much ahead of his time that it will take centuries before he becomes outdated.The only quibble I have about this book has to do with the writing itself. I often had the impression I was reading a translation from German. Which is exactly what it is. This can be hard to avoid because ideas are expressed differently in German than they are in English, and the sentences often have an incompatible structure. Especially when dealing with a subject like psychology. So this kind of translation will always be a difficult task. I must also mention that this collection of essays does not cover all the basics of Jungian psychology. For example, the psychological types for which Jung is very famous are barely discussed.But overall I am quite delighted with this book. I have learned something important in each and every chapter, and it was an entertaining read all the way to the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to explore Jungian psychology but doesn't know where to start. The fact that it has remained in print all those years says more than any book review.
